How To Make A Homemade Reed Diffuser

Learn how to make a homemade reed diffuser using found materials, natural essential oils and four simple steps for a DIY home scent.

Forgoing synthetic scents for natural ones in the form of essential oils is not only better for your health, it’s also better for the environment. Synthetic fragrance is full of chemicals such as phthalates and parabens that can pose health risks, and many contain palm oil or are derived from petrochemicals.

This simple DIY homemade reed diffuser will fragrance your home naturally, minus the health and environmental concerns.

To make a homemade reed diffuser you will need:

  • A handful of dried twigs, about 1cm diameter and 20-30cm long
  • A small jar, preferably with a narrow opening (approximately 200ml)
  • Essential oils you like
  • Sweet Almond Oil, or another carrier oil you prefer

Step one:

Ensure your twigs are well dried by popping them in a very low oven for 20 minutes or putting them on a rack over a heater or wood stove for 24 hours. Then, peel the bark off them using a pruning or woodcarving knife,.

Step two:

Pour about 1/4 cup of sweet almond oil into your well cleaned jar. This will be your carrier oil, allowing the essential oils to disperse evenly and diffuse consistently from your twigs.

Add 10-20 drops of your favourite essential oils. You might try lavender for tranquility and sleep in your bedroom, lemon or peppermint to freshen up your bathroom, or geranium for general floral scents around the house.

Step three:

Place in as many twigs as you can to fit nice and snugly through the opening of the jar. Ensure they are all submerged in the oil. Leave them to infuse for an hour or so.

Step four:

Flip the twigs up the other way and allow their dry end to infuse with the oils. You can then flip them weekly or even more often – whenever you feel you need a fresh burst of scent!

The twigs make a beautiful sculptural feature in any room, as well as being functional scent diffusers. They also make a lovely DIY gift.
